ANNOUNCEMENT OF FACULTY VACANCY

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF VERTEBRATE CONSERVATION BIOLOGY
The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and
Forestry (SUNY-ESF) invites applications for Assistant Professor of
Vertebrate Conservation Biology. We seek a highly motivated scientist
dedicated to conserving native species and natural communities, and eager to
join our nationally and internationally distinguished faculty in training
the next generation of conservation biologists and wildlife scientists. We
are particularly interested in candidates with a commitment to diversity and
inclusiveness.

Responsibilities:  Research will focus on conservation of vertebrates in
terrestrial, freshwater or marine systems, with strong field component and
expectation to build an extramurally-supported research program that
involves graduate students working in part, but not exclusively, in the
northeastern U.S. Teaching will include an undergraduate course in
Endangered Species Conservation and a graduate/advanced undergraduate level
course in Population Biology, plus a field course in area of specialty.

Conservation Biology and Wildlife Sciences Programs

Required Qualifications:
•         Ph.D. degree in Conservation Biology, Vertebrate Ecology and
Biology, Population Biology, Wildlife Science, or related field.  
•         Demonstrated research emphasis pertinent to vertebrate
conservation biology.

Preferred Qualifications:
•         Evidence of creativity, quality, and productivity in research
•         Evidence of ability to maintain an active, extramurally-funded
research program
•         Demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching at
undergraduate and graduate levels
•         Prior experience working closely with or within conservation
organizations 
(governmental or non-governmental)

The Department, College and Broader Community:  The Vertebrate Conservation
Biologist will be housed within the Department of Environmental and Forest
Biology at SUNY-ESF (http://www.esf.edu/efb/), which is also home to the
historic Roosevelt Wild Life Station (http://www.esf.edu/rwls/), one of
several research institutes and centers focused on applied conservation at
the college (see www.esf.edu/research/ric.htm). 

Founded in 1911, the State University of New York College of Environmental
Science and Forestry (ESF) is the nation's oldest and most respected school
dedicated to the study of the environment, developing renewable technologies
and building a sustainable future. The ESF main campus is in Syracuse, NY
and has regional campuses throughout Central New York and the Adirondack
Park. ESF consistently earns high rankings in US News and World Report,
Forbes, Peterson's Guide, The Washington Monthly, Princeton Review and other
national college guidebooks.

The college is located in Syracuse, New York, a dynamic and diverse
community with plentiful natural, cultural, and civic opportunities. “The

Places to Live." Located on the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes, Syracuse
is within a five-hour drive of New York City, Toronto, and the High Peaks
Region of the Adirondack Mountains. SUNY-ESF is one of eight colleges and
universities located in Onondaga County. The Syracuse University campus is
immediately adjacent to SUNY-ESF, and SUNY Upstate Medical University is
located within easy walking distance.

The SUNY-ESF campus provides a rich array of curricular and co-curricular
experiences with our main Syracuse campus just southeast of downtown
Syracuse and our regional campuses stretching from southern Onondaga County
to the Adirondacks.  The Syracuse area, home to our main campus, is home to
many cultural events, museums, state and local parks and numerous festivals
throughout the year along with a growing downtown in the city of Syracuse. 
Onondaga County provides a variety of neighborhoods that include urban,
rural and suburban with strong schools, affordable housing and supportive
communities.  

Central New York is also home to numerous hospitals and medical facilities
including SUNY Upstate Medical University, the St. Joseph’s Hospital Health
Center, the VA Hospital of Syracuse and Crouse Hospital, each of which
provide unique specialty areas that support the needs of the community.

at ESF but in the surrounding areas as well.
