A postdoctoral fellowship in landscape ecology and remote sensing is available at the Department of Biology and Environment, University of Haifa, Israel. This is a one-year position that begins in early 2019, with an optional one-year extension. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Avi Bar-Massada (https://oranim-spatialecology.weebly.com/), and be a part of a multi-institution research group (the University of Haifa, the Technion, and Bar-Ilan University). The main aim of this research group is to develop new remote sensing algorithms to map and quantify vegetation structure and composition in Mediterranean landscapes using super-spectral VENuS imagery (https://venus.cnes.fr/en/VENUS/index.htm). The specific role of the postdoctoral fellow will be to develop methodology to quantify the spatiotemporal dynamics of Live Fuel Moisture Content (LFMC) in diverse Mediterranean landscapes by combining field data, remotely sensed data, and ancillary data using RSGIS analyses. Depending on progress, there will be opportunities to expand this line of research into additional studies on the spatial patterns of vegetation in Mediterranean landscapes, and the ecological processes that operate in them.
The successful candidate must have a PhD in ecology or remote sensing, with proven background in plant ecology or vegetation science. Experience in GIS and statistical software (preferably R) is required, and familiarity with remote sensing software (e.g., ENVI) is preferred. The position will be based at the Oranim campus of the University of Haifa. Located in Kiryat Tivon, this campus houses the Department of Biology and Environment (http://sciences.haifa.ac.il/newsci/main/index.php/en/home-oranim), which comprises a diverse group of faculty and graduate students who conduct research in multiple biological disciplines. Kiryat Tivon is a lively suburban town of 18,000 surrounded by expansive Oak woodlands. The nearest big city is Haifa, 20 minutes away by car. Interested candidates should send an application as a single PDF file containing a cover letter, a detailed CV, and the names and contact details of two referees to Dr. Avi Bar-Massada ([email protected]). Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.
