What is Truth
The book "Path Without Destination" is about the life of
Gandhi and has some interesting insights. A quote:
The quest for truth is a liberating journey; it liberates
me from dogmas, both religious and political. There is no
final point at which I can say that I have found the truth,
and that this is the truth for everyone. The moment truth is
imprisoned in a belief system, it is lost. Truth cannot be
preached; it can be communicated, if at all, only in dialogue
and, more important, through example.
Many/most people in industrial societies and those with a
scientific background see this quote as nonsense. Those
that believe in the quote also believe that the truth they
see can not be communicated by simple definitions and words.
I'm in this latter group along with an odd assortment of
spiritual philosophies, religions, ZEN, and a few areas of
science.
This view of truth impacts how we view our path through life
and is often surfaces in debates and arguments. Usually, it
is not identified as a truth disagreement, so knowing it
exists can be useful in understanding differences.
Truth is a river that is always splitting up into arms that
reunite. Islanded between the arms the inhabitants argue
for a lifetime as to which is the main river. - Cyril
Connolly, "The Unquiet Grave" 1945
Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who
find it. - Andr Gide
