Managing 12 Volts (book review)
Small renewable energy systems (houses, cabins, boats, cars,
motorhomes) are based on 12 volt systems. A few years ago
most of the renewable energy discussions were in this area,
but today the larger systems have moved on to 24 volts or
other voltages. Still, for someone who is interested in
playing with wind, solar, or water power, the easiest way to
get started is with 12 volt systems, and here is the book to
read:
Managing 12 Volts
Harold Barre
1997
The book is fairly easy to read and is oriented towards
boaters and others interested in installing systems. It
does not have an eco focus, but that doesn't detract from
its usefulness.
When we installed our power system i bypassed many of the
popular components sold by "Real Goods" and used boat
equipment instead. Now, after 8(?) years of trouble free
operation i'm becoming convinced this was a good decision.
In other words, diverse opinions and components can keep
our thinking open and increase our options.
