If seen as a transition, these kinds of books and suggestions can be very
helpful to many people.  If seen as the goal, they can be worse than having
no such books at all.  It is not hard to lull people into thinking that
"all you have to do is . . .".  Once they are doing whatever is suggested,
they can comfort themselves with the thought that they are doing what they
can to save the world.

This is why I like Jeff's idea of a path, starting where you are and
stepping in the general direction of the goal as it is seen at the moment,
enjoying the view along the way and knowing that the exercise will be
useful later on.
