During the 50's two very popular science fiction books were:
"Brave New World" and "1984". I read both and can only
remember fragments today. They predicted a polluted world
with power structures disconnected from people and the
natural world. This has happened a bit more slowly than
predicted, but it does give one a very uncomfortable feeling
to see how close the predictions are. Even stranger is to
realize that the elites may be "us" and those resisting the
change may be native people around the world and
underdeveloped countries. The farmers in India resisting
Genetic Seed crops and thousands of other battles which we
don't see. Pick just about any region on earth and one can
find changes marching towards a "techno-power-use-it-now"
future. The importance of wildlife, native culture, and
habitat is placed far below the drive to satisfy present
"wants".
