Chomsky is a Jew and a firm believer in truth and freedom
of expression. He once supported the publishing of a book
saying the holocaust was myth. The book was totally repugnant
to him and his support of it has resulted in years of criticism
and hate mail. Is this activism?

Not quite.

France has a law against contradicting their official view of history.
Part of that view is that the Holocaust happened. An academic in France
said it didn't happen and was being procesuted for it. I'm not sure if
there were criminal actions being brought against him or if he merely lost
his job.

Chomsky said having an offical view of history is wrong and he could not
support it. He felt it was dangerous to impose a government's view on
academics, even if that view happened to coincide with your own view
(things can always change).
