This is a topic I'd like to explore further - going without refrigeration at
all. We have taken some small steps towards this ideal (establishing root
cellar, etc.) but have a long way to go.
I think going without a fridge altogether makes more sense than $3000 ultra
efficient appliances. I think this is a reachable goal for many. Of course, in
the "real world" this would be akin to blasphemy.
It is still amazing to me when it happens to come up in conversation with people
that we neither have cable TV, or even more radical, no dishwasher! I (+ my son)
am the dishwasher appliance in our house. What, no dishwasher, how do you
possibly get by?
