I just read an interesting article by Dennis Ferrill
titled "How Shall we use our time". It suggests a
connection between ZEN and saving the earth. Here are
some quotes:
The point of ZEN is to save the world,
one person at a time.
First we must become students,
we must ask the question.
The rest will take care of itself.
To study the way is to study the self.
To study the self is to forget the self.
To forget the self is to be enlightened by ten thousand things.
-- Dogen
These ideas appeal to me but some claim the ideas are "Western
ZEN" and are not connected to ZEN's roots. ZEN masters such
as Suzuki adoped a more warrior style thinking which may not
fit with current save-the-earth ideas. So.., we learn, we move
on. Each person must find their own ZEN.
