Better not Bigger
by: Eben Fodor
1999
This is a book about Urban growth and how to improve our
communities. Most of the book talks about the myths of
growth with only a small section on solutions. I suppose most
of society believes in growth so it is necessary to point out
the problems. For me this gets a little depressing but
reality isn't something to be avoided. Here is a true/false
quiz from the book to test our attitudes about growth:
1. Bigger cities are more efficient and have lower taxes?
2. Fast growth improves the tax base?
3. Police protection is more efficient in large cities?
4. Crime rates increase with city size?
5. More growth means more unemployment?
6. The cost of living is lower in big cities?
7. The cost of growth is offset by having new tax payers?
8. Giving business subsidies also brings more money
into the community and helps everyone?
9. Environmental regulation is bad for the economy?
10.Developed land produces more net revenue for
cities?
Answers: 1. F 6. F
2. F 7. F
3. F 8. F
4. T 9. F
5. T 10.F
Anyone want to argue with the book?
