Book Review: Taking Back Our Lives

  Taking Back Our Lives
  (The age of Corporate Dominance)
By E. Schwartz and S. Stoddard
  2000

I like books which get down to daily choices and provide
ideas that can be useful. This is one book that does just
that. Anyway, here are some chapter titles:

 1. Take control over information. If you are
not in control then you are manipulated.
 2. Do not let economic thinking rule. There
is a lot to life which does not have a price.
 3. Competition isn't always useful and has
    strong negatives. Know when competition
    is useful.
 4. Beware of Entertainment with a purpose. This
    include TV and most media.
 5. Understand the cultural bias's that destroy
self esteem. This includes sexism, attitudes
    about success, and physical attractiveness.
 6. Accept that most government is controlled by business
    and question biased policies.
 7. Big trade agreements mean less local control and
less diversity. Know where to spend.
 8. Free time is important. Don't fall into the
time-is-money trap or carry a cel phone everywhere.

That covers the first 8 chapters and the book is 17
chapters long. After reading all this i felt life
has become complicated and most of us were not educated
to deal with the important things in life. This book
nudges us towards a better path.

Some quotes from the book:

Children have never been very good at
listening to their elders, but they have
never failed to imitate them. -- J Baldwin

It is not the mountain and the river that
will defeat us, but how we think about the
mountain and the river. -- Vietnamese saying
