This is a review of "The Ecologist" published
in England.

  The Ecologist
  (Rethinking Basic Assumptions)_
  PO Box 357
  Sittingbourne
  Kent ME98UL UK

The style of this magazine reminds me of another
English magazine "The Economist". The scope is
international with a focus on England and the US.
The articles are easy to read and cover current
issues. I found it useful and will probably
subscribe. Here is a sampling:

The most interesting article was a debate about
the use of violence to achieve environmental ends.
Satish Kumar of Resurgence magazine debated Jake
Bowers of Earth First. In the end they found
more agreement than argument. Jake pointed out
that Earth First isn't as violent as the media
suggests and that violence against property
is different than violence against people. Satish
pointed out that the methods we use become part of
us and tend to end up part of the result. It is
better to "be the change we want to see in the
world". This was agreed to by Jake but he pointed
out that in the short term some people faced with
pain and death due to environmental problems need
to react strongly in self defence. At this point
they had uncovered the basic disagreement and the
debate ended.

Another article covered Ladakh, its problems and
unique characteristics. Most of the problems seem
related to introducing western culture and ideas.
The result has been stress on the people and on
the ecology. The ideas that development and growth
are beneficial are now seen to have a dark side and
people are looking back at old traditions.

Another article looks at two old predictions in the
form of science fiction. The books "Brave New World"
and "1984" are contrasted to todays world and rated.
The article found "Brave New World" to be closest
to what has happened in the world. It has been economics
that dominate our choices rather than nations.
