Life is a Miracle
Wendell Berry
Pub. 2000

Like most of Berry's books this one suggests
the scientific view of the world is inadequate
and we need to move back towards nature and
religion. Some quotes from the book:

What is the point of studying nature if it
leads to further destruction of nature?

Berry's suggestions to improve the world:
  1. Embrace health, community, and art instead
     of economics.
  2. Avoid viewing life as a machine
  3. Avoid viewing the world as something
that can be tamed and totally explained.
  4. Give up greed, cunning, and violence.
  5. Critically evaluate the concepts of
     progress and technology
  6. Do not accept the ugliness of the world
     as inevitable.
  7. Accept our chaotic world and avoid
     reducing it to abstract ideas.

The Crazy Makers
Carol Simontacche
pub. 2000

This is a whole book about how junk food
is destroying our brains. It concludes that
the biggest impact is with children and then
goes into better ways of eating.

This topic drives me crazy. We know the food
is going downhill is many different areas, but
our governments keep encouraging it. Sigh..

The TAO of abundance
Laurence G. boldt
pub. 1999

What would an abundant life be like? This
book borrows from Taoism and presents an
alternative view of abundance. Here are some
  quotes:

The more a man lays stress on possession,
and the less sensitivity he has for what is essential,
the less satisfying his life is. -- C. Jung

Ten simple steps to connect to life:
  1. Be cheerful. 6. meditate
  2. Breathe 7. simplify
  3. Exercise 8. spend time in nature
  4. control emotions 9. eat well
  5. rest 10. be aware of present

While the european philosophy tended to find
reality in substance, the Chinese philosophy
tended to find it in relation. -- J. Needham
