Garden tips from the book "Organic Living"

1. Plant a fall cover crop.
Buckwheat, tolerated poor soil, plant March-August
   Crimson Clover, sandy soil, March-August
   Phacelia, most soils, March-Sep.
   Vicia saliva, most soils, March+

2. Try making comfrey tea.
-cut leaves and stuff into net bag
-steep leaves in barrel of water
   -after 4-6 weeks use liquid

3. Plan next years weed control from some of the
   following options:
-intensive planting (no room for weed)
-heavy mulch (start collecting and composting)
-smother or solarize using dense material
    (newspaper, plastic, etc.)
   -interplant companion plants (cover crops?)

Note: A technique that works for me is to view
weeds as desirable for making compost. In
other words encourage weeds and change the
      attitude that weeds are unsightly.

4. The easiest garden to grow is usually in the
   fall. consider these crops:
beets, chard, garlic, lettuce, mizuna, anything
in the mustard family, broccoli, cabbage, carrots.

5. For areas short on water or low maintenance, think
deep rooted perennials. Mulberry, goose berries,
olives, and the new fruits created by crosses with
   ash trees.
