The surface of Lake Bemidji in north-central Minnesota froze on the night of December 19 and has stayed frozen since then. This is a new record - the latest freeze date since records have been kept (1957). The latest four freeze up dates have come in the last four years! These records are being tallied by a scientist in New York who is tracking global warming indicators.
Ice fishing houses are already appearing on the new ice. I'll wait a couple weeks before starting my daily commute across the lake on my racing snowshoes.
