Here are some suggestions from a local gardening
magazine (Garden Showcase).

Now is a good time to check your lilac for emerging
leaves. When leaves get to thumbnail size it is time
to plant peas. This is one of the first reliable
indicators that works in most garden zones to signal
the beginning of the gardening season. Another
use for lilac is in salads. The flowers are edible.

If you have a pussy willow then check for catkins.
They signal the time to plant broccoli and cabbage.
This does not apply to other willows so be careful.

When the crocus begin to bloom it is time to
plant asparagus, radishes, and celery

When the daffodils being to open it is time to
plant Spanish onions and potatoes. This applies
to common daffodils.

When apple leaves begin to open it is time to
plant spinach, parsley, scallions,
carrots, lettuce, and beets. When the apple
leaf is full size it is time for tomatoes.

These plant indicators do not work in all climates
but they are probably better than using most other
methods. Occasionally, the plants are fooled by
late frosts and unusual weather.
