I think it can be proven that caring and
responsible attitudes begin at home. This
includes how we feel about ourselves and
our environment. This is interesting because
it says what we believe may be secondary to
our sense of "being". My favorite quote
says it better:

You must BE the change you want to see
 in the world... Ghandi

Here is a check list for establishing
relationships, friendships (including
the self).

 1. Be aware. Notice what interests
the other person or ones self and
    acknowledge it.

 2. Be tolerant. Life is full of imperfections
and it is difficult to see our faults
sometimes. If we expect tolerance from
others we must give it first.

 3. Be willing to step forward and introduce
yourself to others and to new situations.

 4. Be positive and don't give others a reason
to be unhappy. When faced with difficulties
and cynicism accept it but seek balance.

 5. Share the excess in your life. This can
be anything from tomatoes to kind words.
If life is painful then share that and try
to add an ounce of hope or optimism along
    with the problems.

 6. Be aware of reasons to celebrate and look
for ways to involve others. Mention this to
    neighbors and those close.
