Last week, we read in "XML E-Business Standards: Promises and Pitfalls,"
dated Jan. 5, 2000, by Robert Worden, at
http://www.xml.com/pub/2000/01/ebusiness/index.html, about
XML-lubricated e-commerce:

Recent announcements by Ford and General Motors that they both
intend to use e-commerce for all their supply procurements
in Ford's case worth $80 billion per annumhave been noted by
some commentators as signaling the day when e-business came of
   age.

More information on Ford's supply-chain portal, Auto-Xchange, can be
found at https://fsn.ford.com/Auto-Xchange/. From the FAQ:

What about EDI? Investments that suppliers have made in EDI will
continue to be valuable. Auto-Xchange provides either an alternative or
supplement to EDI depending on supplier priorities and development
plans.

What does this mean for XML? Auto-Xchange will be an XML-based solution,
which means that participants will use XML to handle transactions over
the Internet when using Auto-Xchange
