The JAMA (Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association) EDI standards
are based on the CII (Center for the Informatization of Industry) Syntax
Rules, which you can get at http://www.jipdec.or.jp/cii/CII300.pdf. The
document is fortunately in English.
