Jill Henry asked if there is a list of Element Separators/End of line
indicators somewhere. She wants to change a description that currently
contains asterisks in the beginning with something that won' t be an EDI
separator or end or line indicator.
Dear Jill:
These are determined by the ISA Interchange Control Header Segment. For
a particular interchange, the value at the fourth character position of
the interchange control header is the data element separator, and the
value of the last character position is the segment terminator. (see
standard X12.5 Interchange Control Structures, section 5.1.2). Appendix
A - Implementation Considerations - of the same document includes
Recommendations for the Delimiters.
So if you wish to continue using asterisks in a data element value
containing a description, you could change the data element separator to
a carat ("^" ), for example, throughout the interchange starting at the
delimiter immediately after the ISA segment tag.
A copy of X12.5 is available in the front matter of your X12 book or
CD-Rom, or at http://www.disa.org/x12/x12c/X12CTG3/PDF/x12-5.pdf.
