Hello Jill,
The ISA segent(assuming that you are using X12, EDIFACT has a specific
segment and defaults for the control characters) for your interchange
defines the control characters you will use within the interchange. I'm
sure there is a list or rule that defines the valid ones somewhere in the
X12 standards. Someone else on the list can doubtless fill you in on that.
The rule of thumb, however, is that you want to select control characters to
use in your interchange that will not appear anywhere in your actual data
stream. Any translator that is X12 compliant will apply your ISA defined
characters to the rest of the interchange.
What this means is that you should change your control characters to fit
your expected data, not the other way around. In your particular case just
choose control characters other than the asterisk or any other character
that you expect to transmit. There's no need to change your description
field data to suit your control characters.
