As a general thought, you might just map from/to a format from/to which
Excel(r) or Access(r) can "import" or "export. " I believe both products can
import/export fixed-field-size or comma-separated-value data.
Depending your mapping software and hardware platform, you might be able to
map in "realtime:" Access supports an OBDC interface (don't know if that's
available for Excel); and, if you are really interested, you could write
part of your mapping system as a DDE server or client (depending on document
direction), as both Access and Excel are DDE-client-and-server-capable.
However, the OBDC and DDE solutions will result in you spending more time
"getting the applications to talk to each other" than "getting the
information you need." EDI is, by definition, a batch process anyway, so
what's one more step to "import" or "export?"
