Have you tried buying the CD-Rom version of the X12 standards from DISA?
It's a huge improvement over paper.  Transaction sets are hyperlinked to
elements, and elements to codes.  Codes are searchable.  The only problem
with using the CD-Rom is that it will make you really grumpy if you are ever
forced to use the paper book again.
