Many thanks. I followed your lead to the Odette documentation CD and
found CONTRL V1. I have privately classified it under 'memorabilia' :-)
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Having remembered the V1 from the printed documentation, I had not
checked the ODETTE CD. Shame on me as a member of the ODETTE UK Steering
Group :-( . Having now done so, on my Rel4 CD from last November, I find
that it is not quite memorabilia. The title page for the message is dated
April 93 and refers to the replacement of a previous CONTRL V1 - based on
GTDI rules ( hands-up all those who remember that far back ) - by CONTRL
V2. However, the actual document is for a CONTRL Version D Release 3 from
March 97. Since the document refers to the applicabliity of the CONTRL
message to EDIFACT syntax versions 1, 2 and 3, we can suppose that this is
the revised version issued with V3 of EDIFACT syntax, and that it is
therefore the current version. The V3 structure is the same as V2, so it
must just be a documentation update for EDIFACT V3. Presumably, there will
now be a Release 4 message to go with V4 syntax.
As to finding the CONTRL specification, if you go to the EDIFACT web
site at http://www.unece.org/trade/untdid/welcome.htm and follow the link
on the left for PART 4 United Nations rules for Electronic Data Interchange
for Administration, Commmerce and Transport, then take item 2.3 UN/EDIFACT
syntax implementation guidelines, you will find a Section 10 EDIFACT
SERVICE & CONTROL MESSAGES which is just what you are looking for.
Unfortunately, the content is, and has been for many years, :--- [NOTE:
This Section is being submitted initially as a separate paper, which after
approval, will be inserted]. Well, that's life.
Having gone through all the effort, the BIG question is, of course,
has anyone ever implemented CONTRL, and its friend APERAK. I am not aware
of any implemetations, but I stand to be corrected. Personally, I think we
should all implement both messages, but we are dependent on our EDI and
business software suppliers providing the functionality, and our trading
partners knowing what to do with the messages when they arrive.
