Tracy,
I've worked at several sites where we decided to use the existing mainframe software
for SAP R/3. At two sites we
used FTP to move the files and at one we used XCOM. FTP required extensive custom
scripting to bulletproof the
transfers. XCOM has such capabilities built in. You probably already have a reliable
UNIX-Mainframe transfer method
which would simplify the project.

I would do a proof of concept first before committing to the mainframe by taking my
most complicated map in GT:Server
and try to convert it to GT:Basic. I've only worked with GT:Basic once but I recall
it was fairly limited compared to
the GT mapper. This was gotten around by COBOL or JCL pre- & post-processing
routines. I would then do a detailed
statement of work in order to determine the conversion projects' duration and cost.

Switching to a another translator seems to me to be a very serious move after five
years on a presumably working UNIX
solution. Another alternative may be external support of your UNIX translator either
on-site or off-site until you
can train up to cover it internally. Presumably you must have some serious UNIX
capabilities on-site since you are
running SAP R/3 even if those people aren't available for EDI related work.
