Bonnie, By "Level 5" your client may be referring to WEDI SNIP Level 5 compliance. This is part of a set of transaction compliance guidelines published in a whitepaper by WEDI back in 2001 or 2002. Unfortunately the term 'level' is misleading, as it encourages you to think of levels 1 through 6 (and later 7) as a hierarchy, when in fact it was referring to areas of compliance. Unfortunately vendors immediately seized on the term as a way to beat their own chests and claim their products 'more' compliant than others, and the industry as a whole used these 'levels' as a yardstick for measuring compliance. WEDI has since rewritten the whitepaper and the levels are now listed as 'types' but the original term refuses to die a dignified and well-deserved death. The whitepaper can be viewed here. (http://www.wedi.org/snip/public/articles/testing_whitepaper082602.pdf)
The Types as defined by WEDI SNIP are: 1. EDI Syntax Integrity Testing 2. HIPAA Syntactical Compliance Testing 3. Balancing 4. Situation Testing 5. External Code Set Testing 6. Product Lines or Types of Service 7. Implementation Guide-specific Trading Partners The problem with the misconception is that, while some of the types are hierarchical as a whole they are not. The first two levels are for obvious reasons, but your transaction or compliance tool can address code set testing yet not balalncing... they are two very different functional areas. Nonetheless, the 'level' of compliance became established terminology in the industry. When your client asks about Level 5 compliance they are could simply be asking if you test external code sets, but in reality they are probably asking if your work/product will address types 1 through 5 inclusive. Good Morning, I have been working on a new project and had a twist thrown at me that I have not come across before and was looking for some direction. I am working on setting up an 837 but our client wants us to use "LEVEL 5" (they said it was not HL7) and so far I have not gotten a clear understanding of what exactly "Level 5" means or does. Is there someone out there that is familiar with this terminology that can help me understand. Thanks for your help. Bonnie Boucher ------------------------ Yahoo!
