Todd, I am very much interested in the RFID to EDI links myself. I posted a similar question about a week ago. I have read some posts on the list where authors think that RFID will go the way of the UCC barcode. I must however, respectfully disagree. I believe RFID has the potential to have a much larger impact. The first difference being the obvious, with a barcode it can only be read with a scanner. Whether that scanner is handheld or automated, the package with the barcode must still be in the immediate proximity of a scanner. Not so with RFID. I must profess that while I have no hands on experience with RFID certain aspects about it can be assumed. One assumption is that it will provide much greater flexibility during the manufacturing process. While this does not represent any immediate link to ERPs or EDI I believe there will be a "cascading affect" on EDI. I have ordered up some test equipment from HYPERLINK "http://www.intensecomp.com/rfid_store_sf.html"http://www.intensecomp.com/rf id_store_sf.html They offer a "Starter Kit" with hardware and software - more importantly (from my perspective) they offer a library for creating your own apps in .NET for only $199.00. I am not trying to get a plug in for this company but anyone interested in RFID can pick up a kit from these guys and get some hands-on experience on the cheap. Also with barcodes, they are "written" once (WORM) and that is that. RFID is not, Boeing has a sweet test project in place where components and component vendors of Aircraft are fitted with tags and these tags are updated each time they reach their next destination in the production flow (at different physical locations). I would love to get my hands on that ERP code and see how it is architected. I have no doubt that ASNs are generated with each stop in the production chain. There are many more examples of how RFID is much more robust and useful then barcodes but for the sake of brevity I will limit this post to the previous two examples. While these examples may not represent well-formed links between RFID and EDI, but we must prepare for the possibility that large changes to ERP's and Manufacturing processes will have SOME type of impact on E-Commerce (whether it be in the form of EDI or XML). That being said, many of our clients do not have robust ERP (SAP, JDE, etc) systems. They have homegrown or smaller off-the-shelf ERP's that I cannot imagine will be able to handle RFID with a downloadable patch. These companies will still want to get in the RFID game, leaving a gap between RFID and E-Commerce where people like us; consultants, proactive VANs, IT personnel and software vendors will need to create solutions.
