I have to agree with the chiming in over Softshare. I have worked with
lots of translators in the past, and just started implementing Softshare
ECS and Delta as part of a replacement strategy for Gentran. I am VERY
impressed with the system and what it can do, and I'm not easily
impressed.

Relatively inexpensive, powerful, and easy to use. Can't ask for much
more than that!

Subject: RE: [EDI-L] looking for mapping tools

I second Art's comments. Softshare's product line cannot be beat!

I have used Mercator in the past and compared to Sotshare Delta - well
there
is no comparison. Delta is an easy to learn, easy to use yet extremely
powerful and flexible data translator. It will map just about anything
to
anything. You can tie it into Softshare's other products (ECS or Vista)
or
you can run it stand-alone.
Take a look at www.softshare.com for more info.

I have also used ProEDI in a past life and still support a few sites
that
still have it. It is a decent translator but does not come even close to
what Delta can do. At approximately the same price point, Delta's the
way to
go. Also, last I checked, ProEDI only maps from flat file to EDI and
not to
any other format nor does it allow database connectivity enabling you to
map
directly from your databases. It is also limited as to what your
flatfile
can look like in order for the translator to map it right.
So if you plan to map directly from within your database or from an
'normalized' flat file, then ProEDI won't cut it.

Softshare's support is excellent and their maintenance fees are very
reasonable. (ie. Cheap).

Translation tools vs mapping tools? I personally don't know of a
difference.
The only difference that someone can argue is that a translator must
have
built-in dictionaries when transforming data from say flat file to EDI,
whereas a mapper will only map between the same data format and not
create a
new data format on the output.
Other than that, the terms are used to mean the same thing.
