What is the segment delimiter mentioned in your interchange? If it is OD[CR] then you should only get Carriage return + Line feed. If it is 7C then you should get a "|" as delimiter. I have some times noticed an additional CR or new line character but never noticed an additional "|". It also could be result of your FTP script or the mode of FTP (ASCII/Binary) you are using ...just a guess. Hope this helps. Uppaji.
