If the FBI can pull the plug on a 170 million dollar project I would not
rule out Ford having the same issues. It appears that much of the cost at
Ford may have been for the Oracle software and the cost of integration which
is not easy with the Oracle eCommerce gateway which is not very EDI
friendly. Besides $220 million isn't what it used to be.

I doubt seriously that a conversion "from EDI to EDIFACT and XML" would
have cost "$220 MILLION." It sounds like this Everest was just
warmed-over Covisint. And Covisint was just a still-born "auction" for
squeezing suppliers, wasn't it? In June 2002, Bob Haugen, a
respected Business Technology Consultant active in ebXML, wrote:

Covisint, the auto supplier marketplace that may go under
like all the rest, was initially the child of the US big
3 auto companies. They saw it as a tool for squeezing their
suppliers more on price, and their suppliers correctly resisted.

When Covisint was presented to the Japanese auto makers, a
Nissan executive was scathingly critical. I paraphrase his
statement, which I heard third-hand: "You are solving the wrong
problem, and will do more harm than good. We spend years
developing our relationships with our suppliers. We cherish
those relationships. We have calculated that reliable delivery
and quality are much more economically important than small
   price differences."

An aside: you cannot convert from "from EDI to EDIFACT." Let's be
precise: UN/EDIFACT *is* EDI. UN/EDIFACT is based on a traditional EDI
syntax and is just the international alternative to the ANSI ASC X12
standards. UN/EDIFACT has an edge in the global economy, and many folks
(e.g., GM and its suppliers) have successfully made the transition. No
conversion of X12 to EDIFACT would cost (any single company) $220
million!

According to the Everest information I printed out, everything CPARS was
doing was supposed to be moved to eVEREST. Ford was going to try to move
from EDI to EDIFACT and XML. As far as the X12 documents, 820, 830, 850,
and 860s.

Does anyone know the specifications of this effort? What type of
documents were to be exchanged with the supplier? what format?
