My interpretation is that anything that is sent via digital means for the purpose of exchanging data.
It could be a proprietary flat file, IDOCS, ANSI ASC X12, EDIFACT, XLS, XML, etc. The format is specific to the industry. The transport is separate from EDI as well; ebMS (ebXML), AS2, AS3, AS1, RosettaNet, VAN, OASIS, OEB, NAESB, GISB, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, etc... EDI is just simply electronic data interchange (so its very broad). Actually the acronym EDI is Electronic Data Interchange. So actually, they are correct. Email is exchanged electronically, so it is also EDI ;-) Most of what we do here is EDI using the X12 format to exchange business documents.
