Sometimes when we brag about AS2 and how some TPs want to do it and some don't, we don't realize how much some of these big guys spend on the VANs. Did you know that the average Dept Store could spend as much as $100,000 or more per month in VAN charges?
So, yeah, when they can facilitate it, and make an executive decision to move to AS2, they would have a very good reason to so just because of the savings involved. Ask your CEO if he would not mind an extra $1,500,000 p/year. Perhaps he would even consider putting it back into IT budget? Yeah, right. Seriously, I really admire if someone like Kohl's or Home Depot want to do AS2. Imagine the amount of Testing their EDI and Network guys have to go through just to make sure everyone's AS2 works? I am not talking about a dozen or two of trading partners; I am talking about thousands of them. While I have nothing against AS2s, and I welcome it when one of my TPs comes back with the plan to implement it, I do like VANs, and I do like them a lot. Why? 1) Single point of contact. Don't have to call up all of your AS2 partners if you have a problem. You only call one VAN. 2) Added services (tracing, reporting, notifications etc). Can't go without them when you have unreliable TPs, and a lot of funky traffic. 3) Stronger availability, backup, archiving, DR, flexibility and expertise. 4) Cost. Believe or not, VAN costs are very low now, almost on the level they can compete with AS2 costs. Hope it makes sense. Hello All I'm looking for input on your opinions and experiences in using VANs and AS2. Why do you choose one over the other, or use both? And if you are using both, how do you determine which customers / suppliers to put on what transport? And while I'm asking, how do you think the VANs will survive IF the market moves away from the services the VANs provide? Thanks in advance for your input.
