In an EAN 14 code the first digit is the "Logistics Variant" (also known
as the Packaging Indicator), the next 12 are the individual product
code, and there is a final check digit. There is no assigned standard
for interpretation of Packaging Indicator, but the most common usage I
have seen is to assign 0 for the individual article, and then higher
numbers for consumer and logistics packages of increasing size, so a can
of beer might start 0, and a six-pack start 1 (This is a hypothetical
example; I have never had the good fortune to get an installation in the
brewing trade!).
