I think you are missing the big issue here, it is not how to move data but what format will you transmit it in. Many years ago I used to transmit files on tape, even this is cheaper than a VAN. but every file I got was in a different format. Maintaining all these programs and formats was the reason behind EDI. Then you can add all the problems with ftp which the VAN eliminates, cleanup, tracking and audit and requeueing. You may find a VAN using ftp may satify all requirements.
