Nobody writes translators for 'fun'.  There is always some business need in 
mind.

If you are dealing with an eCommerce site that generates XML, and you have an 
ERP system that imports XML, then you would write (or use) an XML to XML 
translator.

If your web server needs XML and your data is in XML, then you need a 
translator.

My business deals with X12 and databases.  We don't need XML or EDIFACT... yet.

The answer to your question is 'depends on the applications that you are 
using'.

If you need real world XML to XML mappings, then I would recommend a place 
where XML is used...  This is not the place (yet).
