Stanley,

[EMAIL PROTECTED] replied with the conversion tool, not me. There
was no conversion tool for us on 3.1 either. And I totally agree with
you on this. A complete rebuild of Standard Rules and Extended Rules
were needed in order for our maps to work in 3.1. So, we used the
existing map structure but rebuilt everything else. No matter whether
Maddy uses the conversion tool or not you are correct that the bulk of
the work makes it a complete rewrite of all maps. Sterling knows this
and has no other easy way to migrate maps.

It all stems from the fact, Maddy, that GIS was never built as an
upgrade to Gentran. GIS is a whole new beast. New maps, new processes,
new purpose everything! GIS only comes with the basic EDI functionality
(Deenvelope, Envelope, Translation, etc.) You have to build the
business processes you want for your EDI to function as close to
standard as possible. All in all it was a huge transition, but it was
worth it for us.

Dave,

I did not know that Sterling had added a conversion to
the GIX 4x version. My GIS 3x does not have the
conversion.

However; what does the conversion really accomplish?
Per Sterling after the conversion you have to:

"Visual Maps can be imported into Gentran Integration
Suite, Release 4.0 and higher. The simple links,
standard rules, extended rules, and user exits are not
converted by the functionality. The converted,
imported map will only contain the input and output
file format layouts. All simple links, standard rules,
extended rules, and user exits must be added to the
converted map."

It appears to only create the file layouts for the
input and output. There is no mappings ie "simple
links, standard rules, extended rules, and user exits
are not converted".

You still have to manually take every mapping
instruction out of the old map and put the equivalent
mapping instruction into the new map.

Creating the layouts for the maps is easy. Doing the
"simple links, standard rules, extended rules, and
user exits" is the bulk of the work in the process.

Cheers,

Stanley Pool
