Hi Susan,
At the time I was involved we were working with Avnet and one of their
principles. I didn't (and don't) have a relationship with IM, you maybe correct
that they were the first adopter. Fadi could certainly advise. I do know the
active PIP's were all catalogue related and at the time RosettaNet was still
new, we struggled trying to make 3A4 and the rest of the 3A series work as
there were few live users and they weren't supporting high volume transactions.
I agree your recommendation for a Canonical Model is absolutely the only sane
way to proceed. You are correct RosettaNet is not a magic bullet, in many cases
it is more complicated that implementing traditional EDI standards which could
support the same transactions. Now days, as companies work cross vertical they
have to support many different standards and formats.
Example: An electronic components manufacturer with customers in Automotive,
High Tech, CPG and suppliers in the chemical industry. Standards required are
EDIFACT, ANSI X12, RosettaNet, 1Sync (UCCNET), and CIDX. Historically they
would have their EDI translator plus a different box for each of the B2B
connection / standards. Now the trend is EDI / B2B consolidation, this is a
logical step with ERP consolidation, get it all in one box supported by one
application. It may not be "cheap" but the net savings vs. maintaining all
those disparate systems can be significant and it can only be successful if you
standardize the back end integration and processes. With this done you are also
preparing for "SOAP" the next great over hyped magical bullet. :-)
Best Regards,
James Hatcher
