Often times partners agree to specific separators and other control
characters because they know the data will never contain those characters.
E.g., JC Penney uses part numbers containing asterisks ("*") so that rules
out the use of asterisk as a control character.

However, the control characters will invariably be the same set in both
directions.

In other cases, a partner will insist on a certain set of control characters
because his software is hard-coded to expect that set of characters.

"In Theory" you would be able to use any set of charcaters at any time
provided you don't have conflicts with the data; however "in theory" you
could rebuild the Golden Gate
Bridge with kitchen matches and Elmer's Glue-All.

If you are writing software to READ the data, you should allow for the
possibility that any set of characters can occur for any one interchange
(remember you can have multiple interchanges in a file ; and when sending, I
think you'd be best served by setting up a table to retain control character
values by receiver.
