Good explanation.

While I created this document primarily for the use of 'regular
applications' programmers, those working with EDI data being FTP'd all over
Mother Earth might find it of some use.

This fairly short tome covers considerations involved when doing
conversions/data moves involving COBOL-created data types and multiple
character sets; it might be of some use to those who are moving data between
EBCDIC-based sources - e.g., IBM AS/400 and z/OS machines ("mainframes")
and the Sterling Commerce VAN - and ASCII-based sources (just about
everything else).

These considerations become really signficant when you realize that nearly
every installation with an AS/400 or z/OS machine installed and performing
FTP transfers to their Windows/NT or Unix-based LAN clients is doing
'automatic' (that means 'silent' and 'unannounced' - that is, 'sneaky')
character set conversions (EBCDIC<==>ASCII) when the default "ASC[II]" mode
is used for FTP transfers.

You can go to my web site at http://www.talsystems.com, hit the "tech
corner" tab, and review the articled titled "C2IEE.htm" near the bottom of
the page.

It's old and it's ugly; but it's accurate, and (for this group I know darned
important), free.

(And as long as you are there, you can download the FREE "EDICLEAN" utility
from the same page)
