One additional point as an extension of something Klaus-Dieter said: In EDIFACT composites often consist of one piece of 'real' data, and one or more qualifying components which identify it more precisely. They provide semantic differentiation of the various uses to which the data element can be put, and thus reduce the total number of different data elements which would otherwise have to be defined in EDIFACT, and present in a segment. This makes EDIFACT more of a Lego system than X!2 is :-)
