Charlotte, I'm a user of Inovis products (TrustedLink i-Series) but have yet to use XML for My docs....
However, having said that - Inovis offers great classes in the "Inovis Training Roadshow" with an XML-101 "basics" kind of course. I attended one during the recent roadshow they had. XML is just like using HTML - and even so much as similar to using basic - the programming language.... There are some defined "tags" to use - but it's a lot more open to change than HTML is. HTML, for those that don't know is the basic language of the web. It gives you controls over text formats and inserting weblinks and the like..... XML will allow you to set up a document within the "tags" (open and close messages) and then you put the data within the tags.... The tags are similar to the way your e-mail address is shown below, in between the brackets < and > .... So you could set up a document in a similar fashion to the way you do it in "regular" EDI formatting (X12, etc.) by having header and detail sections and having the data broken down in between.... Unlike EDI formatting, where you have seperators and terminators, you just have a new set of open and close tags.... There are lots of basics you will need to learn about XML, and so it's probably a good idea to pick up a book (like one of the "..... for dummies" books... While they're a bit off-putting by title, they ARE good solid basic instruction and help sources!) and/or taking a course in the basics of XML.... Good luck with it.... I found XML to be very easy to grasp and understand - because of a past in web design and HTML - but some don't get it as easily.... If you can grasp the concept of start and end tags - open, close; start, stop; etc. - that for each action you start you have an action to stop or end - you should be fine....
