Yes, there is a viable way within EDI PO files to transmit color, size, dimensions, etc. Virtually any product attribute you can think of has a corresponding code within the EDI standards which allows the EDI PO to contain all of the information necessary in machine-processing the file.
As you stated, you never want to shoe-horn data in "description" or "comment" fields as this defeats one of the benefits of EDI.
