One of the UK VANs, BT EDI-Net, sends your mailbox content to you as a single file. This can contain spaces between interchanges which rather intriguingly appear to 'pad' the stream so that a new interchange starts on an 80 byte block boundary. Another VAN, Easylink, sends 'header' information before an interchange in the file. The bottom line is that you need to be able to identify and isolate interchanges from your incoming data stream.
