Yes I think it started mid of 1991, but the google Archive is cut off.
When I joined in 1992 Rich Hintz was the List Owner. Listserv was a
distributed Mailing List System on Bitnet (IBM Hosts), which only
later was connected with the Usenet/Internet (this is very inaccurate
summary :).
Those where the days, I think last year I run across some EDI-L FAQ
files from me (prepared for posting to news.answers :)
I think Rich is still active, maybe he can help us out, who decided to
start the list in those years (will ping him).
