You're not disagreeing with me.  The person who asked didn't mention how much 
skin they've got in the game.  Also, in the current economy, companies are 
hurting for business and new clients (which the poster possibly is) can 
frequently gain concessions.  Absolute pricing is, at least temporarily, dead.

Although I normally agree with Leah, on this I have to disagree..  
 
About the only way you really have leeway with negotiations on maintenance fees 
is if you are making a volume purchase on a large number of application seats 
or 
connect licenses.  But usually the small company doesn't have that option, at 
which time maintenance fees general run about 20%/year of software purchase.
