If I understand you correctly, the use of multple ISA identifiers for document exchange with the same entity is exactly where your problem is and why you are asking for alternatives. The ISA-IEA envelope is called the "communications" envelope, and should not be used for any application-specific data. (YES I KNOW IN 'REAL LIFE' THIS RULE IS ROUTINELY BROKEN.). I don't know what documents you plan on exchanging with these carriers, or what either of you intend to do with them once exchanged, but surely there is a better way to identify the various shippers and consignees than using separate communications identifiers. You can use separate functional group IDs, or better still IMO embed or encode consignee/shipper identification at the transaction set level. I think perhaps if you take a fresh look at your application using this thought as a starting point you will find your application will be a bit easier to implement. Michael C.
