Technically speaking, in X12, the first acknowledgement should be an 855, then subsequent changes should be 865's. That being said, I've seen customer that want all acks to be 855's. SAP can be configured to generate multiple PO ACks. If I recall, there is an element in the IDOC that indicates if it is the original (ie for an 855) or the 2nd.n for an 865. Regarding efficiency. It depends on the importance, lead-time, and scarcity of the part. For 95% of parts, it probably does not make a difference, but could be a big deal if it is a critical and scarce part that would stop the manufacturing line.
