Manufacturing does not commonly use the PO (850) in this fashion. Forecasts (830/DELFOR) are sent, then shipping schedules (862/DELJIT). Everyone has plenty of time to know what they need and prepare for it, it's all part of JIT, you can't run that on PO's. This is, of course a simplification for general illustration. That being said, I've seen customer that want all acks to be 855's. SAP can be configured to generate multiple PO ACks. If I recall, there is an element in the IDOC that indicates if it is the original (ie for an 855) or the 2nd.n for an 865. Regarding efficiency. It depends on the importance, lead-time, and scarcity of the part. For 95% of parts, it probably does not make a difference, but could be a big deal if it is a critical and scarce part that would stop the manufacturing line.
