Another thing you need to consider is turn around time. I worked for a
video game distributor who would ship orders within hours after the orders
were received so only the 997 was used. I also worked for a curtain
manufacturer and they shipped orders weeks after the orders were received.
There were lots of follow-up status reports generated before shipment was
made.

Sincerely,

I sure hope no one is doing anything like this, especially at that volume.

Getting any status other than "open" (once), "hold/release from hold" (once
per event) and "shipped (or picked)" once should be plenty of info.

Personally, I think you should look at asking your vendor for

855 Acknowledgement - once, when order is received and accepted or rejected
856 ASN - once, when order is shipped
870- once each time an order changes status after initial acceptance *and
such change in status is material to you* .. eg "hold" or "released from
hold" (Your 856 tells you the status has changed from "open" to "shipped")

Repeating the same information 'several times throughout the day" for the
same order is.. is... what's that word I'm looking for.....oh, yes,
"silly."

Not that it couldn't be done, it's just that it serves no purpose. At your
volume all you should care about are "exceptions" to the normal process of
"accepted and open, shipped"
