I know there are other transmission methods such as AS2, SFTP, HTTPS, etc.
And VAN's are still being used. My question is, is it difficult to learn how
these transmission/communications work so I can gain end to end technical
'know-how' of EDI implementations. It seems that the translation and the
transmission knowledge, along with some programming is what I am missing in
order to become technically proficient with EDI.

About this you are quite correct. All of these transmission methods, along
with FTP are used, depending upon the partner, and they require some kind of
a key to open them. Most of the VANs are also using one of these secure
transmission methods. Many of the EDI software packages will handle these
so you will have to check the documentation as to how.

With that you will have to be able to setup:

Communications

Trading Partners

Envelopes

Maps

Subject: [EDI-L] Re: How to get EDI Mapping / Technical Experience

I'm also wondering about transmission/communication methods used.

Kleinschmidt and GEIS were the main VAN's we worked with; we sent the data
to them via FTP. For Kleinschmidt, I would usually call/email them advising
them of upcoming implementations confirming each TP ID's/qualifier, etc. I
would also give info regarding any interconnects. For GEIS, all this was
done online...and of course only the IT staff was allowed on GEIS to setup
the TP link!

I really have missed working with EDI and being involved in implementations
and analyzing data failures for root cause. I've worked w/ GAP, Lowes, US
Military, Sears, and Target; among many others. Even though at times they
could drive you crazy...I loved it!!

I will be contacting fellow co-workers as many of you have mentioned for
additional assistance as well as trying to network on different boards.
Also, will be searching the web to refresh my EDI knowledge as I've been
away from EDI for 4 years now...

If I start getting to 'wordy' just let me know...sometimes I can go on and
on ;)

Thanks,
Paul

Most EDI positions these days want someone with hands-on mapping experience.

complete my skill set?
